Learning Center for Lanna Agricultural Heritage

It has been almost a century now that a leading university in the ASEAN region, Maejo University, also known as “Agricultural Wisdom of the Land” has served the country in agriculture. The university has produced agricultural knowledge, research, and technology that is continuously transferred to the communities. The university has also cultivated and graduated many graduates who work in governmental organizations and private sectors throughout the various parts of the country as well as abroad. Besides this, the university houses various projects such as the Royal Projects and the Royal Initiative Projects. In addition, its faculty and scholars have continued to produce important research that benefits agricultural producers in communities and elsewhere. Furthermore, the university has drawn up its 15-year strategic plan for development, 2012-2026, that promotes harmony, shows respect for nature, and conserves our culture and good values so as to generate a peaceful co-habitation among all beings. Consequently, Maejo University has enjoyed a good reputation for its achievements domestically and internationally over this long period of time.
Once H.R.H. the Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, said “I want to study at Maejo,” which brought much delight to the whole Maejo community.
For these reasons, Maejo University deemed it appropriate to build a center to house all of its agricultural knowledge and technologies on 35 rai of land (including the plot belonging to the New Agricultural Theory) and named it “The Learning Center for Lanna Agricultural Heritage.”
The Maejo Agricultural Wisdom Project is among the university’s physical development plan. Its main goal is to express the identity of Maejo University as a site for organic farming education, a learning center for Lanna agricultural heritage and way of life, a knowledge and research center for a complete natural agriculture, and an exhibition site for agricultural research that will benefit all visitors.
Visitors will get a chance to see a live farming demonstration, Thai Lanna style houses, cow pens, fish farm, farming areas, and a wooden house where exhibitions of the university’s major research and important historical events are on display.
Big trees were planted around these areas. There are areas devoted to rice farming at the 3 different phases: rice seedlings transplants, pregnant rice, and golden-ripe rice ready for harvest. There are also vegetable gardens with fresh vegetables for consumption. All of these are in alignment with His Majesty’s Self Sufficiency Economy.
